"Brad was umpiring. I saw this massive teenager walking around the field looking confused and distressed โ€” and in his hands, a tiny kitten he'd found near a tree. He needed to pitch. He wasn't abandoning what he found. So I said: hand it here."

โ€” Merry, Our Fur Life

Chapter One

The Big Kid
Who Wouldn't
Let Go.

It was bleary and cold. Brad was umpiring. Katie โ€” her daughter โ€” was there with her, watching the game.

And then she noticed him. A massive teenager, walking around the perimeter of the field, looking confused and distressed in the specific way of someone who has found a problem and cannot figure out what to do with it.

In his hands: a tiny kitten he'd found near a tree.

He needed to pitch for his team. He wasn't abandoning what he found. He just kept walking, holding this kitten, trying to figure out a solution that didn't involve putting it down.

She didn't hesitate.

"Hand it here."

Initial observations: this kitten wasn't weaned yet. It was cold. Too cold. She suspected the mother had been moving her litter and he'd happened upon one. Whatever the reason โ€” this baby needed warmth and a bottle, and it needed them immediately.

"He needed to pitch. He wasn't abandoning what he found. That kid had his priorities exactly right."

Gizmo โ€” tiny bottle baby, first days
Not yet weaned. Too cold. Already completely irresistible.

Chapter Two

Patience, Mija.
Just Watch.

They didn't say a word to Brad. They got in the car. Heat on full. Straight to the pet store for kitten milk replacement and a bottle. They were already bottle feeding by the time Brad got home from umpiring.

Brad walked in. Brad was immediately annoyed.

"No. Absolutely not. We don't need another cat."

They already had two. He was being completely reasonable. Katie was crushed. But Merry had been watching Brad for a while now. She knew something Katie didn't yet.

"Patience, mija. Just watch."

She handed Brad the kitten. Said she needed to go get something. Left the room. She didn't need to get anything. That was the entire plan โ€” thirty seconds of Brad alone with a bottle baby โ€” and she knew exactly what would happen next.

It always works. It will always work. Brad is a walking, predictable green flag and she loves him completely for it.

Brad and Gizmo โ€” nose to nose, the moment
Brad. Gizmo. Nose to nose. The plan worked in under a minute.
โญ The Merry Method โ€” Brad Edition

Step 1: Acquire bottle baby in need of immediate care.

Step 2: Begin bottle feeding before Brad comes home.

Step 3: When Brad objects, acknowledge his feelings warmly.

Step 4: "Brad, can you just hold him? I need to grab something."

Step 5: Leave the room. Do not actually get anything.

Result: Brad, alone with a tiny kitten, nose to nose, completely done. Every time. Without exception. He is a green flag of the highest order. ๐Ÿพ

Chapter Three

When He Ate,
His Ears Flopped.

That's when the name happened. It couldn't have been anything else.

They were bottle feeding him โ€” warming the milk, holding him carefully, watching him latch onto the bottle โ€” and every time he ate, his little ears would droop. Just flop right down, soft and loose, because he was that small and that young and that focused on the task of surviving.

He looked exactly like Gizmo from Gremlins.

Gizmo. That was it. That was the whole conversation.

Brad continued to officially maintain his position of absolutely not. He was doing this loudly and regularly while also being the person holding the kitten at any given moment, which somewhat undermined the position.

A bond was forming. You could see it happening in real time. The man who didn't want another cat โ€” who had been very clear about not wanting another cat โ€” was becoming the person this particular cat was going to belong to. It just takes a bottle baby a few days to figure out whose human they've chosen. Gizmo was methodical about it. He chose Brad thoroughly and completely.

Brad's floof. That's what Gizmo became. That's what he still is.

Chapter Four

One More
Obstacle.
Spitz.

Brad wasn't the only one with opinions about this kitten.

Spitz โ€” the original, the soul cat, the five-year resident who had been here since before anyone else โ€” looked at Gizmo with the specific expression of a cat who has been very comfortable with the existing arrangement and does not see why it needs to change.

If a cat's judgment could speak, it would have said: Umm. I think not.

Same process. Forced proximity. Patience. Time. The same logic that works on feral cats and skeptical husbands apparently also works on territorial resident cats who believe the house has reached its cat capacity.

Spitz caved. He always was going to. He began grooming his adopted kid โ€” cleaning his ears, washing his face, doing the specific thing that cats do when they've decided something small and annoying is actually theirs now.

Gizmo had his person in Brad. He had his big brother in Spitz. The house was full in exactly the right way.

"Spitz looked at Gizmo like he had some strong opinions. Three weeks later he was grooming him. That's cats for you."

Katie holds him all the way to the store. Kitten milk replacement and a bottle. Straight home. Brad finds out when he walks in from umpiring.
Brad Comes Home
"Absolutely Not." (He Was Already Done.)
Brad objects. Merry says patience mija. Hands Brad the kitten. Leaves the room. Returns to a man who is nose to nose with a bottle baby and absolutely finished with objecting.
Bottle Days
The Floppy Ears. The Name.
Every time he eats, his ears flop. He looks exactly like Gizmo from Gremlins. The name requires no committee, no discussion, no vote. It simply is.
The Spitz Negotiation
The Original Has Thoughts.
Spitz is not immediately impressed. Forced proximity. Patience. Three weeks later Spitz is grooming this kitten like he invented him. The house accepts the newest member.
Every Night Since
Brad's Floof. Full Stop.
Gizmo sleeps next to Brad every single night. The man who said absolutely not has a 18-pound tabby who considers him the center of the universe. Merry was right. She is always right about Brad.
Gizmo now โ€” Dracula costume, full judgment
Halloween. Dracula costume. Zero joy. Completely correct.
Gizmo โ€” Santa hat, resigned dignity
Christmas. Santa hat. Same energy. Still Brad's.
Gizmo Now

18 Pounds.
Brad's Floof. Still.

The bottle baby who flopped his ears while eating is now eighteen pounds of tabby cat with spinal spondylitis and very strong opinions about where Brad sleeps. The answer is: wherever Gizmo decides. Brad has accepted this.

He is older now. He has slowed down a little. He watches the newer ferals with the particular suspicion of a senior resident who has been here since before they existed and would like them to know that. He is plotting. He is planning. He is almost certainly convinced that if he waits long enough, the house will return to just him and Spitz and Brad, the way nature intended.

He wears a Dracula costume at Halloween with the expression of a cat who is doing this under protest and will remember it. He wears a Santa hat at Christmas with the exact same expression. He tolerates formalwear because Brad asks him to and Brad is his person and that's the whole deal.

He was found cold at a baseball field by a teenager who wouldn't put him down. He was handed to a woman who knew exactly what she was doing. He was placed in the arms of a man who said absolutely not and meant it right up until the moment he didn't.

He sleeps next to Brad every single night. He always will. ๐Ÿพ

Patience, Mija.
Just Watch.

She has said those words more than once. About cats. About Brad. About the way love works when you know someone well enough to trust the process and wait for the moment. Gizmo is proof that the moment always comes โ€” and that a woman who knows her husband, and a teenager who wouldn't put a kitten down, and a cold baseball field on a bleary day can add up to something that lasts a lifetime.
